A piano tuner/technician adjusts the strings of a piano so that they sound in harmony, and repairs, services and restores pianos.

Tasks and Duties
Piano tuners/technicians:


advise clients on the level of restoration that is required
adjust (tune) the piano's string tension to the correct pitches
adjust the tonal character of pianos for evenness, power and quality (that is, 'voice' or 'tone' pianos)
repair or replace broken, defective or aged piano parts such as hammers, flange pins, leather, felt, dampers, springs and strings
prepare (tune, regulate and 'voice') pianos for concerts, recording sessions or other important occasions
may use woodworking skills to repair or replace piano parts, such as tuning planks, or repair piano cabinets/cases
may refinish or repolish piano cabinets or cases
inspect, assess and value clients' pianos for purchase or insurance purposes
may prepare pianos for sale
may sell pianos
may assist with piano deliveries.


Skills

Piano tuners/technicians need to have technical and mechanical skills, good communication skills and the ability to assess, diagnose and solve problems. They should be able to use their fingers to do intricate work and they should be able to run a small business.


Knowledge

Piano tuners/technicians need to know about sounds, pitch and tones. They should also have knowledge of different pianos and how they are constructed, including the different kinds of wood used to make them. An understanding of maths and physics helps piano tuners/technicians understand the theory of sound and acoustics. It is helpful if piano tuners/repairers can also play the piano.


Personal Qualities

Piano tuners/technicians need to be patient, self-motivated, trustworthy, practical and able to make good judgements. They also need to be methodical, careful and have an eye for detail.
Physical Requirements
Piano tuners/technicians need to have good hearing and an ear for music. They also need good hand-eye co-ordination and flexible fingers.


Education

There are Specific educational requirements for piano tuners/technicians. However, hightschool level music or Collage is helpful. English, maths and science to Year 12 level is also helpful.


Entry Requirements

The basic entry requirements for piano tuners/technicians are an interest in music, good hearing and a driver's licence.
Membership of the New Zealand Piano Tuner and Technician Guild is recommended. Piano tuners/technicians need to pass an exam to enter the guild.


Experience

Experience working in a music store, playing music alone, choir singing or in a band, group or orchestra, and tutoring or teaching may be useful for piano tuners/technicians. Woodwork or other handiwork may also be helpful.


Training on the Job

Skills are gained on the job. The best way to learn to be a piano tuner/technician is to arrange for on-the-job training with a practising piano tuner.


Workplaces and Travel

Piano tuners/ technicians work at clients' homes, in piano workshops and in music stores where they may have contact with customers. They may often work alone when tuning or repairing pianos. They may travel to work in schools, churches, concert halls, restaurants, theatres and other public places.
